Depends. If a dog or cat is brought up with other animals from young then they are often fine with other animals. But you wouldn't try to get a ferret and a rabbit to get along. That would end badly.

We used to breed hedge hogs, it was kind of messed up I guess you could say. They had babies, we kept 1 and the mom and baby smokey mated and she had babies again. None of the 2nd litter lived.

If you know how to hold a hedgehog properly, it doesn't hurt at all. Their spines only prick up if they're scared, as defence. Gardening gloves are perfect if you want to be safe.
