Since it has come up a number of times the comments, let me iterate that skin-to-skin contact DOES stimulate the baby's immune system by increasing oxytocin levels. Unless you believe that oxytocin has no bearing on the baby's immune system, then logically it can be claimed that skin-to-skin contact stimulates the baby's immune system to some degree.

@ johndavies115: I didn't know that women were required to have a PhD to know how to breast feed or to help other mothers be more successful at breastfeeding. I believe having successfully breastfed 5 babies over nine years qualifies me to speak on the subject. You are welcome to disagree, sir, and free to be a credential worshiper.

No, wonderlandink. The point I was trying to convey is that the consistency of the milk changes to suit the baby's needs.

It shouldn't be if done right... however babies and you yourself will take time getting used to the process... I had a difficult start to mine because my baby was very tired and lazy and I would have to sit for an hour at the start... now it only takes 10 mins! Hint- if you get cracked nipples use a little expressed milk and let it dry on the end... it is a better healer than the bought products!

You can get what is called Mastitis... I got this at about week 4 because my baby went through a growth spurt and then didn't require as much milk... mixed with accidentally skipping a feed on one side. Just feed as much as possible to get rid of it and go to the doctor to get antibiotics and the problem is fixed!

Why is it people go ooh disgusting when they see a baby being breastfed with human milk and not when they see a person drinking an animals milk. Human milk is for humans! My baby is almost 2, has solids and sippa drinks but still prefers the breast, breast is afterall, best and has been proven to make children smarter!

TheGoodGirlGoneBad: When it comes to this topic it would be impossible to find anybody in the world who is more ignorant than you. Do serious research, get scientific opinions, then you can say what you think, Why do you think that all producers of formula and even of feeding bottles always mention on their labels and panflets how much better is to breastfeed than to nurse on formula??? Obviously it isn´t to sell better but just because they musn´t hide this true from the buyers.

exactly. not to mention breast milk is free, you don't need to go to the store to get it! congrats on your new arrival man, you've got one lucky child.

Women should cover themselves when feeding in a mall.

Skin-to-skin contact increases the baby's oxytocin levels. There's the connection.

EXACTLY...I'm going to be dad for the first time in about three weeks. When we were looking for a pediatrician we specifically told them we did not want a doctor that would resort to medication for everything. Breast feeding boosts the immune system too. Why ANYONE would want to use formula if they didn't have to I have no idea.
